Got a job offer, how do I negotiate with my boss for a promotion at my current place?
I work as a teller. Ive worked for 3 years as a teller and I have been nominated for the president's award, have won multiple bank-wide cross-selling campaigns for accounts, have a great relationship with my boss, customers, co-workers. I got a job as a customer-service rep at another bank. Just recently. How do I negotiate with my current boss to be promoted at my current bank, using my new job as leverage?

- Sensitively. Employers don't like feeling blackmailed. Try having the dialogue about your worth and promotion opportunities without the 'threat' of the alternative offer first, then if they don't deliver, say I didn't want to have to but I've been offered...
- Don't play games. You're gonna put this much effort into a dollar an hour? Give him your notice, with the "I hate to do this to you, and I wish I didn't have to" line....and that's it. He is in an awkward spot, and you are too. So just quick and simple. If he's a good boss, he'll know his spot. Kinda like buying a car. Most people don't give in on the first number. Give and take.
- You could sit with your current boss and explain that you are not satisfied with your pay level and your level of responsibility at your current bank. Point out all of the awards etc just to emphasize that both he/she and the bank agreed or you would not have been nominated for or given the awards. Tell him that this led you to go outside to get a feel for your current worth in the marketplace and lo and behold you have a job offer with more responsibility and paying more. Then look him/her straight in the eye and say that you would much rather continue with the current bank, because you like their values and the people and you fell you can grow while contributing to the success of the bank but you want the opportunity to grow right now and you would like a promotion and a raise. Otherwise you'll be forced to tender your resignation and accept the other job offer. Hope this helps.
