When applying to jobs, is it better to use no cover letter over a default cover letter?

As for a default cover letter, I just mean a pretty basic one used multiple times, and just changing the company/position name each time, or would it be better not to use one at all if your not taking the time to research the company?

  1. Better to use a default - how will they even know what you're applying for? Some Co's will toss a resume w/o a cover letter. But, custom tailored is best, if you are serious about being employed, why not do the work? gethiredstayhired.com
  2. Always include a cover letter. I have 4 different defaults I use, so they don't look same-old, same-old.
