- the best truck driving job is what you do as a hobby, and get a real job during the day.
- The ones you want are the ones where you are transporting toxic material.
- Dry-van there's a lot more local companies with dry vans then the others.
- If you have enough experience then you can get on with a local freight company, like Yellow or Overnite or FedEX. They've all got day and night runs which get you homw everyday and off on weekends.
- A local driving job is where you can get home every day. The best jobs are union. Best job security benefits and a retirement pension.
- Local car hauling pays really well. Look up www.alliedautomotive.com it's one of the biggest carriers for rail-to-dealer car transport in the country. They do train and they have terminals in quite a few locations. If Allied isn't in a city near you, you can try finding your nearest automobile railyard or auto auction yard and start asking around. Not all companies will train, but many do. It isn't that hard, once you're used to the job you can load in 45 minutes and unload in 20. I'm a female driver and though there are only a handful of us (there's one in Michigan who works for Allied, weighs about 105 lbs and has a prosthetic leg, and she does circles around the men)....if we can do it, there's no reason why an able-bodied man can't do it either ;). It can be a pain in the butt in the rain and in the winter (I worked in FL so no ice& snow)....but if you are willing to deal with that, the pay and benefits are worth it. Allied is a union company as well, so the benefits are top notch. If car hauling isn't your thing, try Yellow, SAIA, Estes, FedEx and other line-haul work. The pay scales are usually pretty high there, too. Wal-Mart also has great pay, awesome benefits, and a really good personalized scheduling system so you can schedule your work/time off in a way that suits you.
