Where can you find local temporary jobs that last a week or even a day, cash in hand etc?
In any field apart from building and manual labour. I think there are companies that specialises in this but don't know any names...

- I used to get a lot of jobs from Elance.com You have to pay to join, but I seriously made my money back in the first job. I did free lance writing for about a year and all of my jobs came from contacts there. It was pretty good money, but I got to where I worked all day at my regular job and then worked all night on wrinting. I just got burnt out so I quit doing it. I did writing but there are tons of different categories available there. Other than that most "day" work is a labor job. Oh yeah and you get paid through Elance and they take a cut of your money. but once you establish some clients they will start paying you through paypal and that saves you some of the fees. I am not a rep of elance or anyhting I am a real person who really did get work from elance. There are a lot of people on there that are members and you have to bid for the job but normally once you get your first bid taken and get good feedback the jobs start rolling in. One other thing your first job might only pay you $25 to $100 but I had several jobs that paid me $1000 to $2500 and honestly they seemed easier than the $25 jobs. It just depends on your specialty, writing did not pay anywhere near what some of the marketing jobs etc. paid.
- There are many companies that specialize in temporary work that pay weekly. You have to "apply" and interview, but you can often be placed the next day. I've used several temp agencies to find secretary-type jobs. Try the phone book or search engine for temp agencies. I've used Kelly Services, Randstad, Office Team, and other local services. If you are looking for long-term work check out http://legitimateworkathomejobs.synthasite.com/ good luck!
- Short term employment is often hard to find. My suggestions to you: First, go to Labor Ready or some other Temp Business that is similar. Make up flyers and pass them around in your neighborhood. Give them to local business owners too. Offer to do whatever work it is you want to do, such as : Computer work, Babysit, Clean Garages, Organize Cupboards, File Papers, Wash Cars, Mow Lawns, Pull Weeds, Tutor the neighbors kids, Walk Dogs, Dog sit, Clean the Pool, whatever... Post first whatever it is you want to do or are good at ... You should keep your options open and make a decision after the persons call you instead of not giving them many reasons to call. Say on the flyer why you are only looking for short term employment.
