What jobs can I get with an EMT-B certification in Virginia. I live towards the heart of Richmond.?

I just got out of EMT-B class and passed the state final exam no problem. I have no clue where to begin looking for a job with this certification though O_O. I know I can work on rescue squads or something similar. I want more variety in search or just someone to put me in the right direction (my emt teacher wasn't much help with job searching). I have little to no job exp. and just graduated high school. Please any help is greatly appreciated. Include names and links if possible.

  1. First off, now that you have an EMT-B certification you need to do something with it! I recommend that you get on with a volunteer rescue squad in order to get some experience. (Just having the classes does not mean you can handle yourself in a real situation.) Where do you live at? Henrico has the Henrico VRS, Lakeside VRS, and Tuckahoe VRS. Hanover has Ashland VRS, Ashcake VRS, East Hanover VRS and West Hanover VRS. Chesterfield has Forest View VRS, and Bensley Bermuda VRS. This list is not all inclusive. Thus, running volunteer will get you experience and also easy access to other training. EVOC is very important, plus it might give you a discount on your car insurance. (Driver training and safety program!) If you are an EMT-B, it is hard to get a job at Richmond Ambulance Authority. They look for ALS. However, if you have EVOC on top of that your chances increase. Try looking at jobs at some local hospitals. VCU-MCV is your best choice of getting a job working in the ER. Also, several jails hire BLS to work in their medical sections. Pamunkey Regional Jail and Riverside Regional Jail come to mind. Now, what you can do as an EMT-B is directed by the Doctor that you practice under. The interesting thing about working at a jail is that often the Doctor will give you additional training for the work you do. (IE: Use of needles/IV's, et al.) Obviously, you won't be doing tracheotomy's but you will have additional duties than what you would run on a squad. Thus, join a volunteer rescue squad for experience and job leads. Richmond Ambulance Authority once you get EVOC or additional training. Local hospitals can use you in the ER. Local jails can use you in their medical sections. I hope that this helps. Good luck!
