How can I request to retake an offer rejected by me two months ago?

If I send an email to request the offer, what should I write? I tried to negotiate the salary at that time, but they don't agree, so that I decided to reject the offer. (I have a fresh master grduate, but only offered $35000) Now I think the job market is terribly bad, and decide to take the offer, instead of keep searching the job. It may be better to gain some job experience first. Anyone can suggest me how to write such an letter? Thanks. At least I give it a try, no loss for a try. The jobs are available, it is federal government, they hire while and while. Such a big organization, one more person is no big deal.

  1. What makes you think the job is still available? Even if the job is open, in today's market, I doubt they would be interested in you after you rejected their offer.
  2. You may need to re-apply all over again. Just say something general like "at the time, i had personal reasons why i could not accept the position. I have since resolved those issues." You don't need to really go into details. You aren't wrong for expecting more then 35k with a graduate degree but work there for a while and then apply for a higher position with more pay or keep looking while you are there. Another spot will eventually open up and you can go to them as long as you aren't signing a contract.
  3. If you go down this path, it may be wise to have a verbal or in person conversation as opposed to an e-mail conversation. But no matter what, you need to have a valid reason for wanting to take this job - and "just so I can stop looking" isn't valid. If you told them that $35K for someone with a masters degree is too little, they may not be interested in you at all. As a hiring manager and recruiter - it would be unusual for me to reconsider someone who turned down an offer for this reason. I would consider it a risk of hiring a short term employee, and someone who wouldn't stop looking for another job while working. That is probably what you need to overcome. But to ask is not a bad thing.
