How can I make myself stand out amidst many applicants for a job?
I have been out of college for 4 years now. My first year out of college I found a job in my field of study (teaching) but I had to move to a new area where jobs were scarce and had to take a job in a different field. I have been at my current job for the past 3 years. There is now a job opening in my degreed field, but when I went to turn in my resume, I found there are multiple applicants for this job -- as expected. At my current job I have gained a lot of experience in audio/visual technology, including sound, media, computers, projection, etc. How can I use this to my advantage and make myself stand out amidst older, seasoned professionals? My husband says I should make a presentation on the computer or show them a recent video-editing project I have done. Is this a good idea?

- Sell yourself! i think your husband has a great idea!
- On your resume, you should list any projects you did in college like you would work experience. ------------------------------------------------------------- example: (if you had to turn in a project for class that was say, a commercial and newstory) Media Projects: Commercial for Toothpaste - Lead team of 4 to produce 45 second commercial - Created and designed script, storyboard, and set - Acted as camera-person, filmed scenes - Edited film for final production Newstory for Voting - Researched and identified subject and people to feature - Interviewed people both on and off camera - Advised producer on media laws for publication - Edited film for final production ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Well, I'm just making stuff up here, but I think you know what I mean. All the things you did in college count too! Also, you could use same format for your actual work experience. Hiring managers want to see your hand's-on experience, not just a bunch of mumbo-jumbo that sounds nice.....tell them what How you were involved with all of your projects. Good luck!
