  1. You should start out by looking for a teacher. A teacher will help you with not only technique and pitch, but also with auditions, performance opportunities, and repertoire. Mine charges $50 for an hour lesson, but prices can range from $30/hour to over $100/hour. To find a teacher, you can ask around and more than likely somebody you know will have a recommendation and you can go from there. However, a lot of the best teachers in my area are professors or graduate students in vocal performance at the local universities. Call up a university in your area and contact the music department to see if anyone is accepting new students. The teacher is the first step, and the most important, but if you find that after a few lessons you are not improving, or you don't understand what your teacher is telling you to do, try a new one. It can take a couple of tries to find a teacher who uses imagery and descriptions you understand. Don't get discouraged.
