Moving out of Maine?

My boyfriends mother wants to move out of Maine to North Carolina and she isn't familiar with computers so I figured I'd explore my options. She needs to find a job, an apartment/house (given she has five kids coming with her) that will comply to the income she makes and possible help from the state until she can get on her feet. Is there any programs or people she can contact in order to get ahold of such information? I've looked a lot online too but getting information from people who have had experience with this seems a lot better. I also plan to move out with her but it's more of a watch and learn situation. Thank you very much.

  1. Project housing. This is the only one i can think of. They will locate u into an apartment of proper size to accommodate the number of people in the household. (with 5 kids u will have to share rooms with siblings so they my suit your mother with a 3 bedroom apartment) Rent is cheap and it reflects your income. I believe the state will only ask for 30% of your income as rent. Hope this helps, heres a link http://www.hud.gov/local/nc/renting/hawebsites.cfm
  2. You'd better check NC laws - a lot of states have a "waiting period" for welfare and other state benefits before you can qualify. If she needs help getting on her feet, she might be better off staying where she is, saving up some money, and THEN moving.
