What is the least expensive way to move stuff including furniture from Colorado to California?

We rented a trailer to pull in back of the car, but then found that the car couldn't pull the weight. Any thoughts on preferences for renting a U-Haul, Penske, or Budget truck with car in toe dolly, or having a moving company move things for us?
