I need someone to answer this questions who has worked at a retail store or at a local job?

I am 17 years old and looking to find a job at a retail store (clothing store) but I am up for anything (except McDonalds, Burger king, etc). I need all the advice you can give me about how you found your job and what you did and some tips would be helpful 2. I live In chicago in the Northside. I would also appreciate it if you can tell me how you applied...because I applied online to many different jobs and never got a response Do you suggest online job searches or actually going in the store and asking for a job (job hunting) and what would yiou say and to the employer or how would u ask fro a job?...any other infromation you give me will be appreciated

  1. Apply in person. If you go to McDonald's or Burger King or any other fast food place, if they're hiring, you'll get an interview right then and there. My first job was working at Burger King when I was 16 years old, and I got hired the same day I applied. You can do the same thing at places like The Gap or American Eagle Outfitters or most any other apparel store in the malls -- usually they'll have "now hiring" signs at the cash registers. Applying in person takes a little more effort, but it's worth going straight to the place instead of expecting some hiring manager to check their email.
  2. i applied online at my job and they called me like a week later. it's suggested that after you apply anywhere (online, or not) call them after a week and speak to a manager and ask them if they've had a look at your application. if they haven't then when they go back to look at the apps, yours will probably be one of the first ones because you reminded them. good luck!
  3. I have a year experience in retail as a sales-associate. Getting your first job is extremely difficult. Not having experience is also a turn-off to employers, and some don't take the time to train new hires. To make job searching worse, our economy is doing horrible. Companies are laying people off and retailers are cutting employees hours. I work in retail and I usually work between 22-23 hours a week. I was given 6 hours as my work schedule for this week. It won't hurt to go to places like supermarkets, fast-food resturants and ask if they are hiring. I can imagine, that people who are getting laid-off or in fear of lossing their jobs, are going insane job searching. i did hear on the internet (news) yesterday morning that some companies are starting to hire again. Retail usually doesnt hire this time of the year, but give it a try.
  4. I applied in person but went to my states local job finder place. If you apply online call the store and see if the got it and check up on it. Just dress nicely and say what they would want to hear, your a good worker and follow directions well. Good Luck, p.s. I work at arbys and got hired on the spot.
