Trying to find a first job. Hard in my area.?
I recently got a car, thankfully it is paid off and gets decent mileage, but insurance is costly (around 120 or so a month). My parents are currently paying for it, and, I expect, want me to help out, and I do want to help out, as well as have some extra spending money on the side. Since the day I turned 16 I have applied to numerous different businesses in my area, with no avail. Big chains, and small businesses. I've applied to them all. I do have three questions though 1. I do make above average grades (around a 3.6) and wish to keep them around this area, as do my parents. I'm fine with have a lot to do with a little time to do it, but I am unsure, since this would be my first "real" job, how much it would affect my school work. 2. Since I have found it difficult to find a job in my area, could I maybe get some suggestions on how to obtain this job? I know the basics, as they aren't that difficult to comprehend, but if I could get some tips from some older people who have more experience than me, I would greatly appreciate it. 3. Are there any, free, websites that have job listings on them for jobs suitable for first-time job seeker? If I could get a site, it would go along way in helping me further. Also, I have completed courses in Spanish (up to Spanish 2), as well as CAD (Computer Aided Drafting), up to level 2, would these be thing I would like to put on my resume, if for nothing but fillers to make it look less empty?

- man that first job was tough for me also. I watched as others at my school got jobs. I applied and applied, but no luck. I finally got a job because a friend of the family put her neck out for me. In retrospect I believe I looked to young and inmature to land a job. Funny thing was, once I got hired, they found I was a good employee. Haven't looked back since. Good luck, your grades will only slip if you let them.
- 1. as 'James' answered your grades will only slip if you let them.......... stay committed to your school work and COMMUNICATE your needs with your employer....... don't wait to the last minute to ask off for a school project or to study for a test. plan ahead, be realistic about how much you can work, do not over commit, talk to your employer about your needs, and plans for the future. 2. just keep working at it, always dress as if you were going to an interview when picking up applications, be prepared for the application process, bring your own pen, list of references with current contact information, copy of your resume' (albeit a resume is not necessary for your first job it does not hurt)...remember you never get a second chance to make a great first impression. when job hunting never take a "friend" along with you, if someone else is going to drive you they need to stay in the car. be polite, professional, and persistent...... 3. there are NO web-sites that will assist you ........ your first job is found by going out to the different businesses and meeting the manager. only apply via the Internet if/when you are explicitly told to do so by the management of a particular business....... resumes need to be to the point. and should focus on skills and strengths that translate to the job. a resume' is a highlight film NOT a documentary. do not add "fillers"......... BUT if these classes are relevant to the job you are applying for include them. due to the high the unemployment rate at this time it is very difficult for minors to get a job.........the jobs that use to be held by teens and retirees are now being taken by adults trying to support their families......... Businesses such as Publix, Kroger's, Food Lion, Sonic, Chic-Fill-A, McDonald's, Winn-Dixie, Krystal's, Dairy Queen, and Burger King along with smaller local businesses that are in the same genre tend to hire those your age. Fast-food and grocery stores are willing and able to train new employees but........................ Minors tend to have many issues that affect their ability to work such as tardiness, absenteeism, and numerous schedule requests, poor work-ethic etcetera. I am NOT implying you will have those issues but the fact that many your age do makes it more difficult for you to get an opportunity to prove your worth. Because of this you must be able to show through words and actions that you are reliable, dependable, punctual, detail oriented, coach-able, punctual, mature and team oriented. You will also need great references since you don't have work experience. Talk to teachers, counselors, clergy, coaches, club sponsors, and directors of places you have volunteered or people you have done casual labor for and ask them about giving you a reference. Get accurate, current contact information for them and ask them to be ready to get calls for references from potential employers. Remember: Most businesses are individually owned and operated so it is the owner’s policy and past experience with minors that will determine if they will hire you. Apply everywhere you can, the worse that can happen is they don't hire you. click on the following link for information about child labor laws http://www.youthrules.dol.gov US Department of Labor YouthRules
