question about navy SAR training and qualifications?

I want to join the navy to be in SAR (search and rescue) aircrew. Ideally, id like to be a rescue swimmer but SAR aircrew works too. I am about as fit as your average guy. I am willing to work and train as hard as phyisically possible to to get the job I want, but i'm wondering if even with that mentality, can an average person go into basic training and be fit enough to train for SAR swimming, If not, what are some good air crew jobs, preferably helecopter aircrew.

  1. Christobar -- An average person that is willing to work out (assuming that you are already and adequate swimmer) shouldn't have too much trouble being physically able to perform as a SAR swimmer. There are physical demands, but the requirements for SAR swimmers aren't anything like the BUDS or SEAL training. So, don't worry too much about it. Also, since the Navy realigned the aircrewman ratings about 5 or 6 years ago, I think that all SAR crewmen have to be swimmers -- that wasn't the case ~10 years ago. I'm biased, but I think that the Navy helicopter communities are great. You'll enjoy the camaraderie. Hope this helps//Navy Helo Pilot
