Being a Social Worker in Ontario, Canada?

I'm a Canadian living in NY. My husband and I may move back to Ontario next summer (we'll see). In May I am graduating with my MSW. I am looking ahead for social work jobs. I'm thinking we may move to the Kingston/Belleville Area or Ottawa. When I look online it is so hard to find any social work jobs in these areas. Do you think it's because there's a shortage of social work jobs in Ontario? (here there are plenty of social work jobs opportunities available at different times during the year). Or do you think I just haven't found a good Canadian job search engine? I've tried careerbuilder.ca, monster.ca, workopolis.ca...they all don't being up many if any results for social work jobs in the Kingston or Ottawa area. It's so strange! Please help me out...

  1. Nearly all jobs are full with local people eager and waiting for vacancies.
  2. There are certainly many social agencies in Kingston, Ottawa and the rest of eastern Ontario. Perhaps you will need to contact them directly. You may find that it helps to be already living in the area, doing volunteer work and internships and getting to know people in the agencies personally.
  3. It depends on where you are searching. I am an MSW graduate from Ontario and you can look at the provincial government websites, different health authority (hospital websites) or for child welfare try this website www.oacas.org. There is the list of all the CAS's in the province. Other than that I have been out of province for about 8 yrs so I have nothing else to suggest.
  4. Hi there, I live in Ontario, Canada. I personally think that all of those job search engines aren't the greatest because not every employer posts their wanted jobs online. Find institutions that you want to work at and see if they're hiring; that's what I do, and my friend who has a social worker diploma did that and he landed a job in Trenton (just under an hour south of Kingston).
