How do I find the law to find out what reference my previous employer left?

If I was not selected for a job due to previous employment reference, is there a law that allows me to find out what reference the previous employer left? I had asked the new job what reference I was left, but they won't tell me the specific reference that was left for me.

1. In order to find out what a reference says about you - you'll have to resort to an old trick I used in bygone days. Find a friend who will pose as the HR at a fictitious company, checking your references for a new job. That's the only way, you'll find out this reference is saying about you.
