College freshman, no work experience, how do I include high school info/class projects in a resume?

I graduated high school last year and am going to my community college. They have a program where you can sign up and see local job listings. I'm going to fill out an application today for a hostess job at a restaurant but I want to put together a resume to hand in as well. I have absolutely no work experience (not even babysitting), so I want to highlight the things I've done in school. I did a bit in high school with clubs and was even part of a leadership camp, and I did a little volunteer work in a course I took this year. I read in many places that you shouldn't put a lot or anything about high school in a resume, so I was wondering where in the resume, if anywhere, I should include the stuff I've done in high school, and under what heading it would go under.

  1. If it's the only relevant experience that you have, then you must include it on your resume. When I was in high school looking for work, I included a section on my resume entitled "Relevant Experience" and just included that I had taken cooking course in high school, and that I had received a certificate for participating in "Junior Achievement" a program that teaches youth how the business world works. It will come up in your interview as well, and remember, there's nothing wrong with admitting you have NO experience, everyone has to start somewhere! Good luck!
  2. The advice about high school applies to college graduates who are looking for their first full-time job. If you're just out of high school and looking for your first job of any kind, then you do want to list your activities and accomplishments from school. You'd probably want to make a section called "Clubs and Volunteer Activities" where "Professional Experience" would usually go and put most of it under there. If you were selected for the leadership camp, that could go under "Honors and Awards." You might also want to go see the people in the job office at the community college. They can probably give your resume a once-over and give you some advice.
