Difficulty of getting a management job?

How difficult is it to get a management job without a some kind of business degree? Or do you typically start at a different position and move your way up? I've heard of English/Journalism majors starting as consultants and getting as high as executive jobs in corporations. People tell me that many people don't use their undergraduate degree anyways. Can anybody share experiences?

1. While a formal business degree is certainly beneficial, if you prove yourself over the years to have the capacity to earn a management job then that will stand you in good stead for your application.
