How to get a job with a small graphic design firm, or something similar?

I have an Associates in VIsual Arts & over 3 years experience in the graphic arts (I work freelance from my home for direct mail advertisers) and I am interested in moving on and working for an actual location. Many larger companies seem to require a Bachelors and/or 5+ years experience... so how do I get into a smaller local company? I've tried job listings on craigslist, careerbuilder, newspapers, etc. I'm looking for more direct ways to find those places that many need me. Has anyone done this and how did you?
