After 4 years in military, do you search for entry level jobs?

My husband is getting out of the Marines in less than a year and will have served 4 years and earned a Bachelor's degree. When he looks for jobs, does he look for "entry level positions"? Where does he begin looking? What are the best job-hunting sites for him to look, in your opinion? He is an NBC(though his actual work has little to with this) and was temporarily an MP when we went to Iraq. His degree is management/marketing. His actual work involves sitting around doing positively NOTHING. ***** I'm actually wondering if his time in the Marines counts as 'job experience' and will have jobs available to him that are NOT entry level; OR, when I go to monster.com, etc, does he need to type in "entry level". Does that make sense?

  1. what was his MOS? What is his degree in? What kind of work does he do?
  2. If he's earne his bachelors- he should be able to do something with that. Otherwise he could go back to school. As for sites- there's a ton; monster.com, yahoo has one i think and local newspress sites come to mind first. tell him good luck...happy new year's to you both!
  3. I had 8 years in active duty and had a college degree (BA). Personally, I went with a staffing company after spending months on my own on job sites and job fairs. I ended up with a entry-level job with a global logistics company. I've applied for a federal job, but with the economy the way it is, I don't expect to be hired anytime soon, but at least I have another job and I'm in the running for the federal job. Of course, it depends on what your husband did in the USMC and if it can be applied to the civilian world. I was in a combat arms MOS and since I didn't want to work in law enforcement and/or corrections, I was pretty much S.O.L. I do plan to go back to school and get a masters in my degree so it will help my chances of getting something that pays more. But after being in the military, I'm not too interested in doing white collar work. Good luck!
  4. I can only tell you my experience. When I got out of the Air Force, 1975, the job market was poor, like now. The only places that would hire anyone without experience was for entry level positions. Don't let the "support our troops" mania fool you. The job market could care less about Vets (sadly) and will look for their idea of the best qualified, military or not. Sorry to be gloomy, it's just been my experience that way. I would say though, for your husband not to give up or get depressed if he does struggle to find a job, he may not have too, but there are good places to work out there still, and will pay a good starting salary.
  5. You're getting a little bogged down in "levels" and such.. What are his skills? what technical training did he recieve in the Corps? What has he done in the Corps... everything from jobs to responsibilities... meaning, if he's a corporal, was he supervising a shop? Did he have a crew of lesser ranking people he supervised? If so, he's got some type of skills certification, supervisory experience, potentially security clearance, and experience running the flow of the office/shop. If you start looking in "entry level" he'll be competing with high schoolers for work. Start with jobs that require the experience he already has... depending on what that is. TheMarine Corps is DEFINITELY job experience... but you need to couch his responsibliites and duties it in terms that translate well to civilian life. there is an agency within the Corps that helps with writing resumes, conducting job searches, etc. He needs to take advantage of that.. they'll have good information for him to follow.
