The U.S. needs to re-vamp it's Disaster Response?
With our National Guard units involved in combat operations and training away from their home states, we are very vulnerable to disasters. There is a solution called DMAT teams which are great in theory but are operationally ineffective. These teams were concieved in the idea that health and safety professionals could respond to disasters and function as a search, rescue and medical teams. The only problem is that members aren't paid (EMS and Firefighters usually cant afford to go off for a month) and their is no job protection like that afforded National Guard personnel. The National Gurad units coming from neighboring states to help with tornado damage shows we have a problem and it needs to be fixed. I am not trying to lay blame because this problem existed long before the current administration. That is my two cents worth but what do you guys think? What else can be done to help improve our response? Do you think Congress should get involved?

- The response to Katrina was dismal and the government must be always ready with any disaster.
- Congress got involved that's why our troops are Afghanistan and Iraq.. They need to come home and take care of our own, I'm so tired of hearing about a country that is so busy fighting each other they cant get past the age of tribalism. A democracy is not and never will be about tribalism. They are so busy bombing their own schools and hospitals and next door neighbors, I feel at times they are hopeless idiots, there are to many people that could really use the help and would greatly appreciate it, after all if all the Senators and congress men and VP's And Presidents want to help them let them spend their own money doing it, their cause is no greater than anyone else's. I would rather spend money in Turkey helping earth quake victims and money in Tennessee helping Tornado victims, and money in New Orleans helping Hurricane victims, and people in Japan helping earthquake victim's, or people on mars for that matter And they have the Gall and audacity to talk about any kind of liberal and still call them selves conservatives, Bull. This is Republican politics turned upside down.
