Is it okay to send a resume instead of a curriculum vitae?

I'm applying to a few different positions at universities that ask for a CV (curriculum vitae). I just have a resume though because I'm only starting out, and I don't have anything to put in a CV in regards to volunteering, organizations I belong to, publications, etc. Will it look poorly on me if I send a resume instead? If it's mandatory that I send a CV, what should I put in it when I have such little experience?

  1. If it's a position where a CV is important, then yes, it will count against you. More to the point, if they really care about experience... and you don't have any (or enough)... then even a CV wouldn't get you the job. Do what they ask, in terms of format. For sections that don't apply to you (such as publications), simply state "None." They can then decide if this matters to them or not.
  2. No, you need to put together a curriculum vitae! You should start working on it now so that you can have it for future applications. Start with: Education Specializations Research Experience (school, dates, description) Teaching Experience (title, school, dates and description) Publications Abstracts and Presentations Academic Service Professional Affiliations Research Grants Honors References with names and contact info This should be between 2 and 3 pages.
  3. Just send what you have. A CV is really just a detailed resume.
  4. A CV is a resume
