Want to work with animals...having a hard time finding anything any advice?
I want to work at a vets office or pet resort. I want to be around animals. I never see anything in the local listings for any of them. Should I just go up there, ask if they are hiring and give them my resume. I mean its not like with a fast food job where you go in and pick up an app and turn it in... I eventually want to be a vet tech but I only have a high school degree so I know that won't happen right now. But there are other jobs I can do there right? I want to work with animals but I'm having a hard time getting in anywhere. And no I don't want to work retail. What is your advice? Thanks. Volunteering isn't an option. We need the income. Do vets offices actually have you fill out an app or how does it work Thanks.....like i said though I can't take a volunteer job. I have to support my family

- You could call around to local shelters and vet offices and ask if they have any need of volunteers! It won't be paid work but it will get your foot in the door. The other thing you could consider is trying to find a job doing office work for a vet (like a receptionist). If you don't see anything posted it cannot hurt to call around to see if anyone has any need of someone like that. Good luck!
- You could always start by doing some volunteering. Most places like some sort of experience with animals before they will hire you. Go to your local shelter and volunteer then you will have something to put on your resume. You could also go fill out an application you never know what could happen. They might just like your enthusiasm and start you off as an assistant or kennel tech.
- Volunteer at an animal shelter, do what they ask you to do... and get to know everyone involved... When a job comes open somewhere, you will here about it... Don't be surprised if they ask you to clean the bathroom.... If you need money, you get a job at Sears or JCPenney, and do the volunteer work when you are not working your regular job.....two ways you get this kind of job...know somebody or do volunteer work first..... This is how I ride horses for free...I muck out stalls on Saturday morning....
- I'm not all that familiar with pet resorts... do you mean boarding kennel for dogs and cats? Anyhow, one of the BEST girls I hired once was still in school, she was in her graduating year. She dropped off her resume every week, and frankly, I got sick of seeing her. Her resume showed nothing that could work to be any value to our clinic... she owned a dog and was an avid equestrian buff, but that was it. One day she showed up in scrubs, I just about died!! This girl had integrity, and it showed!! What could I say? Long story short, I hired her on as kennel help. Within a few days she was helping me in the back restraining (and amazingly well, I might add), and helping the other girls out front with clients - everyone loved her. After three years, and after me training her for tech work (she was a complete natural) she was another head tech - under me - and over another who had already been there for a year her senior. Once I left the clinic on maternity, she took over. She is now in her second year of med school to be a doctor. As much as I wished she'd stay with animals, she'll make an amazing doctor! Anyhow, I'm just trying to say, the despite all the schooling that some vets require, you ARE able to get your foot in the door and prove to those that matter, that you're 100% capable of doing the job. If you're determined, you CAN do it. Get in a clinic. Hand out your resume time after time after time, be persistent and DON'T give up. Expect to volunteer while you prove yourself. Listen, watch and learn and you will have no problem!! Good luck!
- Go apply at a kennel.
