When to follow up on your resume/ job application?

I submitted an application and resume for a position on DEC. 5th 2008. I got this automatic response in reply: Message for: Dominique Dear Colleague: Thank you for your interest in employment at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. 1. let me see my dear: are u desperate for the job? Anyway I would have called her directly to test the water or temperature. Then only followup with a letter. The phone call can sometime be a proactive tele interview. She might either say oh ms dom we have KIV your resume (then u can say thanks) or Oh yes Ms Dom I was about to call u...(then bingo)... I think you should be more proactive...as this concerns your livelihood my friend. If u get a bad answer move on....the sun will still rise from the east.... happy new year
2. Hi Dominique, Your follow up is very appropriate and the e-mail you posted is professional and courteous. You should consider giving them a call as well. They may open your resume or application while on the phone with you and that extra look may help especially if they are buried in applications. If you have not sent this yet, you might want to change the paragraph starting with "If necessary..." You could simply attach the resume and ask if they need any more information.
