Can a potential employer find previous jobs by doing a background check?

I am applying for jobs and do not want to list my most recent job on my application, will my potential employer still be able to find out about my previous jobs by doing a background check.

1. No. It is of course possible, but not for a standard background check for new employment. If they hired a private detective or something along the lines of, then most likely. However, jobs don't do that so you don't need to worry. The standard check is your criminal record and sometimes a credit report (which I think is ridiculous).
