Should we put a photo on our Curriculum Vitae?

I'm using the Europass template. Should I put a photo on? My friend thought it wasn't the norm in the UK to use a photo.

Public Comments

  1. I live in Spain. It is the norm here.
  2. No don't, it isn't the normal in the UK, and it kinda suggests that you want them to judge you on your looks whereas an employer wants to know about skills and experience, not how pretty you are.
  3. No...don't include a photo....some companies do ask you to send a passport sized photo WITH your C.V. but not on the C.V. itself......if they don't like the look of you from your photo then it may hamper your chances of getting an interview.
  4. It's not the norm in the UK. Even though it shouldn't influence anybody's judgement of you, it may well do without them being aware of it.
  5. I would have thought only if it would add to your chances of getting a job. I know it's all "based on your experience" but sometimes it's a case of "if your face fits" and all that. If you think it may help do it, otherwise don't. It's not the norm here unless you will be on "public display" shop staff etc etc? Hope this helps?
  6. No, not in the UK. Your friend is quite right. If asked for a photograph, then it would be OK but generally the form is just to put down all qualifications etc which show you to be a good candidate for the post.
  7. Including a photo on the CV is certainly not UK practice. While citing anti-discrimination and other humble motives, in general Brits don't like to publish photographs of themselves. If you include a photo on your CV when applying for a job in the UK really depends if the job requires you to fit into a UK role and company culture (just do as people do over here and don't include a photograph) or if this role has international aspects (for example transport, tourism or export sales) - in that case I would include a photograph. Employers react differently, but from personal experience I would say that of the many applications they may receive, the one with a photo will stand out. During the interview stage it will be easier to remember those candidates with a familiar face, so again the employer may or may not react positively. Regarding your European template - make sure that you have a look at how it is done in the UK. If you apply for a job include a short summary (4-5 sentences) that highlight your relevant experience (& "your unique selling points") for the position you are applying. List your previous work experience starting with the MOST RECENT. Good luck!
