Whats the best way to transport a 5 year old cat from California to Colorado?

I need to know the best way to transport a 5 year old cat (14-15 lbs. if that matters) from Orange County, California to Northern Colorado. Thank You

  1. In a carrier. All the cats I've ever put in the car always freak out. You're going to have to let the cat out to go to the bathroom and eat. That's probably a 16 hour drive.
  2. I would also suggest a carrier large enough to hold a litter box and with enough space to give them water without them having to crawl through the box to get it.
  3. When we moved from Washington State to Minnesota, we just put all three of our cats (plus food, water, and litter) in a rented SUV. They meowed for the first few minutes each day (three days of driving), but then they found places to sleep and were quiet the rest of the time. I think travelling with people they knew (us), and letting them out of the pet carriers so they could roam around calmed them down a lot. Of course we put them back in the pet carriers before we opened the doors of the SUV, and we kept the windows closed while driving so they wouldn't jump out. Before we left, we looked up pet-friendly motels along our route, and made reservations in advance. It actually went much better than I expected before we started out. .
  4. In a carrier in a car. My kitties flew once. A litter of yappy cocker spaniel puppies bugged them the whole flight. My kitties hated their one and only flight.
  5. in a carrier make lots of overnight stops.. preferably 2 nights per stop sometimes.. (Ok I have no idea how many days this trip is as I dont live in USA) take food and water away from the cat at night BEFORE your trip.. pack food, water and litter box - set the cat up in the Hotel room bathroom every night... make sure you find pet friendly hotels do not sedate - but do keep radio on do not let the cat out of the kennel between hotels.
  6. Here is a good page about how to make the carrier more reliable. Since you will be most likely lifting and carrying the pet carrier in and out of the car and maybe into Hotels. It would be just awful to loose your kitty in strange town. http://www.dryfur.com/snap_together_clips.htm Most of the info is for airlines where cat excape is the no. 1 incident and the major cause is missing or faulty pet carrier latches.
