How can I get my website higher up the listings for free?

I work for myself teaching first aid courses since illness forced me to quit my last job but I'm having trouble making ends meet and I don't have much of a budget for advertising. I do have a simple website but it's not very high on the listings when I do a Google search. Any tips on how to get it onto the first page/near the top? Many thanks

2. Google ranks pages on how many links there are to the page. So you need to get other sites to link to your site. That's the only way I know how to improve rankings on Google.
