How do you write a cover letter to apply to companies that have no job listings?
I am trying to contact companies who do not have career listings on their websites or human resource departments to contact. How do I go about saying "Hey can you consider me for a job even though I have no idea what's open"? Also, what would you put in the subject line so they don't throw it out immediately?

- This isn't nearly as hard as you might imagine. Dumping a resume/application into a web dropbox or email is stupid. It's a waste of time and effort. Find a living, breathing human to send it to, but dialing the company's main switchboard if necessary. It is essential to know the business model of various companies when sending resumes so that (at least in theory) you could have a place at the company. Given all that, make you resume and cover letter as perfect and pretty as possible. Send emails on their way with a overly simple spam-ish headline like "Qualified candidate seeks 'MARKETING' position" You are only as good as your contacts and resume. Finding targets is the easy part if you are in an city/career with moderate job turnover.
- First check the templates on teh Microsoft website referenced and second just be honest, phrases like " I admire your company because thsi and that and decided to write you, althought there are no position posted for this particular job. I beleive I have the requirements for this job in case you have a position in the near future )
- You would first need to find out the name of the human resources manager or person in charge of hiring. There is usually someone who does the interviews and hiring. You will need to be creative while still sound professional to catch the reader's attention. In the body of you letter yo will need to market your skill and to state why you are interested in the company and what position you are applying for.
