How can I get my start as an interior desginer in a small town?

I live near New Orleans and I want to find a job in the interior design feild. I don't know where to look besides the local paper and online job searches. So far these resources have come up empty.

1. First start by packing your bags and moving to a city. lol, seriously... my mother is an interior designer she said you can go to antique stores and try to get experience that way. If you dont have a degree you need to invest in that. You can volunteer your services. Most of your jobs and therefore your experience will be based on referals. You also can look up your local chapter of ASID (american society of interior designers) perhaps they can assist your further.
