Why is my job search unsuccessful?

I moved to a new city, with the SOLE intent of finding an actual career and getting out of the "admin assistant" nightmare that my life has become. I have a Bachelor's degree and I have five years of AA experience but obviously I'm trying to branch out. I've interviewed with 2 creative staffing agencies providing them a design portfolio, application, etc. and responded to the various positions they email me but they won't follow up when I've contacted them. I've applied with 3 general temp agencies, same thing. This is now the third week I've waited! I've even put in an application with Whole Foods and a couple of retailers for p/t jobs out of desperation (mostly to have enough $$ to pay May's rent) and none of THEM have called me back. Seriously, what gives? I know that with the staffing agencies it can't be a matter of being too overqualified but I'm very concerned that it's due to not having local job history. Any thoughts?

  1. Dont fret!! I'm in the same field and you have to send your resume out to about 50 times before you get one response. Dont get discouraged. I'm estimating, of course. The right job is out there waiting for you. Just keep looking. It will come. I'm in the same boat as you are. I've been here in a new state for several months now. I worked at a temp position for a little while, now I'm actively looking for something else. I KNOW it will come. Think about how many Admin Assists are in your area & when we see a lead, we ALL jump on the same job. Imagine how many resumes come accross the desk of that one person. Poor personnel lady!! YOUR JOB is out there. It may not come the way you're looking for it to come either!!! keep doing your thang!
  2. I feel you. I have been out of work for about a year now. I think you may have hit it right on the head about the not having a local job history. But, money is tight for everyone right about now. And the problem is, there are just too many people in a hiring position that are willing to discriminate. Everyone needs a job. With all of the immigrants willing to work for little to nothing, companies are finding new ways to discriminate. Check the ads (must be bilingual). I would tell you to do what I am doing, pray and pay your tithes. The Lord has been taking care of me and mine. I'll say a prayer for you.
  3. Be patient dear. Oftentimes the best job opp comes along through connections and referrals...given that you're new there, give yourself some slack and DON'T stop looking!! Go online and submit your CV everywhere, go around to jobhunt and do just that. Take every encounter as an opportunity to network-you never know who you'll bump into! If you're running out of cash, try your luck at freelance work or do odd jobs even if they seem beneath you...you gotta do what you gotta do, right? I've 3 P's in life: PERSIST, be PROACTIVE AND be POSITIVE. The universe will repay you in kind...trust me on this ;-)
