How can i get hired as a firefighter?

I'm dead set on becoming a firefighter. However, its hard to get hired as one when you need to be a resident of where ever your applying to. This means i would have to move to a different city, find a mediocor job, live there for 4-6 months... then hopefully do well on the exam. The city i live in now wont be hiring anytime soon due to finacial issues. Searching for firefighter jobs on the internet gets you no where! What can i do? Where can i apply that there will be no residency requirement? I am NYS Firefighter-1 certified, NYS Rescue Technician certified, along with a list of other courses. I'll be an EMT-Basic by December.
