- I honestly dont know about the big organizations, but here in the country, I have a friend who is part of a volunteer search and rescue with his GSD. But even the human participants are on a volunteer basis.
- Dog trainers that teach search and rescue are paid just like anyone else. Search and rescue dog handlers are paid as well. Large civilian organizations do offer a better pay scale than your local police department, etc. Since civilian org. are not bound by police union contracts, government approval, etc. As far as how much? I honestly don't know. Obviously every organization is different, with different needs. I would suggest contacting a organization that you would be interested in working for and see what pay and benefits come with the position. K9 Officers are paid their police salary, with incentive bonus for being a K9 Officer. A lot of police agencies purchase the dogs and provide money for food, medical care and general health. The agency I work for provides me with money each month to help defray the costs of food, toys, etc. All of Yukon's medical bills are paid for by my agency.
