I think I might have Multiple Chemical Sensitivity. Where in Maine can I find a doctor for who believes me?
I just started a new job, and when I am there, my eyes are dry, my throat is dry and I cough a lot. Also, when my girlfriend wears skin lotion or perfume, my throat gets really dry and I breathe it and it feels like my nose dries up (and I get a bad taste in my mouth). Does this sound like MCS? And if so, where can I find a doctor knowlegable about it? (I live in Maine). Also, I have had an allergy test, and I am allergic only to pollen (and Maine has no pollen this time of year). Plus, how can you be allergic to smells?

- YES! I also have MCS (as a result of 52 years of undiagnosed Celiac Disease (an autoimmune disease that damages the small intestine). You are not necessarily 'allergic' to chemicals. Allergy means the immune system is attacking something it perceives to be foreign. Chemical sensitivities tend to be more of a problem in detoxifying certain chemicals. The best book I have seen on this subject for the public is by Sherry Rogers, M.D. - "Detoxify or Die". It can be found on Amazon.com. Dr. Rogers is a specialist in the field of Environmental Medicine and also a sufferer of MCS. This book is a must read! (less than $25.) If you run into docs who "don't believe in MCS" refer them to the 'bible' on this subject (not a layperson's book): the four volume set by William J. Rea, M.D. at the Environmnetal Health Center in Dallas, Tx (he has a web site - search Yahoo) titled "Chemical Sensitivity". You may be able to find a health practitioner in your area at the website for The Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM)- again search Yahoo for their website. Their phone # is: 253-858-4724. You might also try to find a website for the "American Academy of Enviromental Medicine" which trains and certifies specialists in this field. Their phone # is: 316-684-5500. Lastly, many Chiropractors and Naturopathic Physicians (not available in all states) have special interests/training in chemcial sensitivities. Good luck! what you are experiencing is real and significant. Start with Dr. Roger's book.
