Are my evergreen trees and arbor vitae lost? We have had torrential rain over several days and a very heavy snow pack that melted just before the storm hit. Now many of my evergreen trees and arbor vitae are tilting, some at almost a 90 degree angle, because the ground is so soaked. What do I do? I can stake the arbor vitae I suppose, if that's the right thing to do, but I can't handle the trees. Please help. Thank you.
Leyland Cypress or Arbor Vitae? We are trying to create a screen along our rear property line (about 40 feet wide). We are trying to decide between 8 leylandii or 15 arbor vitae. Which should we choose?
Can you feed arbor vitae with Holly Tone? That's my question and I'm stickin' to it. The package says it is good for "all evergreens." If Holly Tone is not a good choice, what do you suggest? Thanks. Thanks. I fed 22 new Leyland Cypres today and had some Holly Tone left over. Of 6 Globe Arborvitae I planted in the spring, one of them is looking a little punk, so I'd like to try to perk it up. I'm in southern New Jersey.
Arbor Vitae versus Leyland Cypress - Which to choose? I am screening in a small corner of my backyard. I live in southeast Pennsylvania, USA. I have met with a few contractors and I have gotten different ideas from everyone. The question at hand, Arbor Vitae or Leyland Cypress? Anyone who has an opinion or experience with either would be helpful. I'm just not sure which to pick. Thanks so much for reading and replying.
Question about some Arbor Vitae I planted last year.? I planted 40 Arbor Vitae last year & on a few of them the roots have grown up into the mulch. Is this alright? Is there some way I should correct it? Also 2 of them I either planted to deep or the mulch covered the top of the root ball completely. Can this be corrected. Thank you in advance for your help.
What do you suggest for a hedge? I live in Zone 5, SE detroit...I put up two decorative kwanzan cherry trees to block the view of my neighbors, but they died in my nasty clay soil....So Im going to replace them....I bought forsythias, but when i take the cherries back, i can get 4 6 feet arbor vitae now that they are on sale....I think i like the arbor vitae better for a hedge, but they grow slowly , what should i do with the forsythias? I have one forsythia in my back yard....i dont like the big mushroom shape it makes, so i trim it like a square, and that bad boy has to be like 9/ 10 tall now
Ninebark Diabolo - Would this make a good privacy hedge? I would like to plant a natural fence to separate my yard from neighbors. I have seen Arbor Vitae used as well as Privets, however, I do not like the looks of these. Does anyone have any experience using Ninebark Diabolo as a privacy hedge? I see it grows 8-10' in height and 8-10' spread. I want to make sure it fills in nicely and can be trimmed tightly. I do have a smaller yard so I don't want it too overwhelming. I was considering hedge Boxwoods, but apparently in my zone, they sometimes can't take the winters. I live in Southern Wisconsin so I do need a hardy shrub. Let me know if anyone has any other experience or ideas. I do want it to be at least 6' but not too high, as I live in a ranch style home. I appreciate any feedback or ideas. Thank you in advance.
Where to pick up rental cars at the Los Angeles airport (LAX)? I just booked a rental car from Dollar USA that says it is to be picked up and dropped off at the los angeles airport and yet it has the address: 5630 Arbor Vitae Street, Los Angeles, CA, United States. Does this mean I will have to have transportation to this place to pick the car up or will the car be on the airport grounds? Thank you for any help.
Can someone suggest some privacy landscaping advice for a sheltered and elevated first floor elevated terrace? I live in a two story townhouse. I have a ground floor terrace with two sides exposed and is sheltered with a second floor balcony. The front is the larger side of a rectangle and the smaller side is centered with a 6 stair walkup (terrace is elevated about 5'). Some other terraces are surrounded with tall, thin shrubs like arbor vitae which I really don't want. I'd like something really nice that grows about 10' to 15' tall. I like the idea of the lilac tree which seems like it stays low enough and spreads out (works for the front). I also like the burning bush but there's conflicting info as to how tall this bush grows. If it doesn't grow tall enough I may choose these to directly cover the front terrace wall behind a suggested tree. But this is all I have so far. Any suggestions with photos would be really helpful since I know so little about landscaping. I'll choose best answer before time is up. Thanks for helping me out with this ;)

What are the Pros/cons of Harvard "non-degree/special student" application vs. PhD application upon graduating? I am a second year mathematics/philosophy undergraduate student at a fourth tier university. I don't want to sound conceited or anything of that sort, but I suppose that I'm what you might call a "gifted" student; that is, I maintain a high GPA, participate in a good deal of academic and extra-curricular activities (e.g. community activism, Putnam competitor, debate, mathematics tutor, 6th grade math teaching assistant, presented papers at academic conferences, etc.). Unfortunately, I don't find myself well served (at all) at my current institution, Wayne State University. My departmental (mathematics) adviser is a nightmare, who essentially told me not to try and get into a top PhD program in maths. The facilities are somewhat sub-par, and the administration is a generally clunky, bureaucratic nightmare. Therefore (I am getting to the "question" part soon enough!), I am hoping to transfer, either to the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (Go blue!), Michigan State U's honors college, UNC--Chapel Hill, or Vanderbilt. Due to this, there will be a lapse in my mathematics education for a while. Despite having a deep familiarity with high-level mathematics, up to the level of algebraic topology/homology theory (I am researching the general Grothendieck cohomology right now), I will not have as much de facto experience to show for it. My dream is a PhD program in pure maths or in logic (via applied maths) at Harvard, Columbia, MIT, Berkeley, or UCLA. However, I think that I would benefit from a year-or-so of advanced mathematics courses, beyond the basic undergraduate level. I wish to do something similar to the Tripos III program (Cambridge) PRIOR to taking the math subject GRE, in order to see if I have the wherewithal to commit to a graduate course in mathematics. I was wondering if I should simply apply, upon graduation, to non-degree/"special student status" programs at Harvard, Princeton, Yale, and other "reach" schools, as these are often easier to get into and provide greater flexibility, while bolstering the strength of one's curriculum vitae. Should I just take the subject GRE and apply directly to PhD programs? Should I take the GRE and apply to both? What would you suggest? Thank you!
